The Civil Protection Department today dispatched three containers full of bedding to help victims of flooding in Albania.
The flooding in the North West of the country a month ago displaced hundreds of people. Several countries scrambled to help.
CPD Deputy Director Patrick Murgo said the Albanian authorities had specifically requested bedding.
He said that the department is preparing another seven containers to send to Haiti. The logistical details have been worked out and only confirmation of the final port destination is awaited.
In that case too, he said, the emphasis was on bedding, because many people had lost their homes. However tinned food would also be sent.
Mr Murgo said that donations which were found not to be needed by the countries concerned would be stored and kept for emergncies, whether local or overseas.
Perishable food is distributed to local charities.
