Crash involving motorbike, four vehicles at Santa Lucija tunnel

Road closed temporarily, long tailbacks reported in south during rush hour

The northbound Santa Lucija tunnel was temporarily closed to traffic on Friday morning, following a collision between a motorbike and four vehicles.

The police said the motorcyclist - a 34-year-old man from Gudja - was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital. He was later certified to have suffered grievous injuries.

The accident happened at around 7.30am, and involved the Honda SH300, a Toyota Vitz driven by a 30-year-old woman from Għaxaq, a Peugeot 208 driven by a 24-year-old woman from Marsascala, a Fiat Doblò driven by a 42-year-old man from Marsascala and a Nissan X-trial driven by a 44-year-old man from Marsascala. 

The accident created long tailbacks in the south during rush hour as the northbound lane of Vjal Santa Luċija had been temporarily closed to traffic.

The lane was reopened by 9am.
