Never has so much been written by so many on a subject they know next to nothing about! The latest gem comes from Dr Pierre Schembri Wismayer (The Sunday Times, September 18) who proposes building a golf course on floating barges out at sea, no less.

Not content with such a preposterous idea, the good doctor suggests that the barges could double up as a base for lampuki fishing. I suppose the next step would be to suitably alter golf vocabulary; with a 'birdie' becoming a 'fishy', an 'eagle' becoming a 'shark' and an 'albatross' becoming a 'whale'. One would 'cast' rather than 'drive' the ball off the tee.

Thankfully Dr Schembri Wismayer harbours dim hopes that his suggestion would be taken seriously. He did get one thing right - the idea is crazy!
