Customs controls would have to maintained once Malta joins the European Union as it had to be ensured that the country was free from certain practices, including illegal trading, particularly drug trafficking and smuggling, workers at the Customs Department were told during a meeting called by the Union Haddiema Maghqudin.

The workers were told that although Malta would open its gateways to other member states, Customs would still have to carry out inspections.
