A Customs Department clampdown on contraband continued in November when 43,340 cigarettes and 3.8kg of tobacco products were seized.

The department said on Sunday that its inspectors raided 50 shops, three homes or garages and eight markets and also searched a car.

Another 151 searches of vehicles were made as they landed from the Sicily ferry.
18 containers were opened for inspection while the containers scanner was used for 13,219 searches.

Other seized contraband items included a large number of plastic bags, 69 bottles of win, eight bottles of alcoholic drinks and two cars.
