Customs yesterday intercepted four containers carrying 10,000 counterfeit Nike shoes and 14,000 fake Philips hair dryers (pictures).

The containers were landed at the Freeport from the Far East and were destined for Casablanca and Algeria.

The Customs Department said Malta was a signatory to the Intellectual Property Rights (Cross Border Measures) Act and was in duty bound to stop such counterfeit items from passing through.

Customs has seized 18 containers with counterfeit goods since January 1.

Earlier this week the department destroyed 8.5 million counterfeit Marlboro cigarettes and 12,000 pairs of fake Nike shoes following a court decision.
