F.O.I. Director General Edwin Calleja and administration manager John B. Scicluna held a meeting with the Customs director general John Mifsud, who was accompanied by the director (International Affairs - Customs) Joe Brincat and the director (Administration - Customs) Joe Galea Maucieri, on Tuesday.

The purpose of this meeting was for the Customs officials to outline the implications of working document TAXUD/763/2003 and Regulation (EC) No 1972/2003, both issued by the European Commission recently on Customs transitional measures.

The working document is to inform economic operators and customs administrations in the current member states and in the accession countries about the consequences of the enlargement of the Community with respect to customs legislation, while the regulation is intended to avoid the risk of deflection of trade affecting the common organisation of agricultural markets due to the accession of Malta and the other nine new states to the European Union on May 1.

Following this meeting, the FOI issued a limited circular on the Customs transitional measures for agricultural products to all FOI members operating within the food and beverages manufacturing sectors, as well as a circular to all FOI members on the general customs transitional measures.

FOI members wishing to receive these official EC documents, or wish to any clarifications on these transitional measures, are to contact the FOI Secretariat by e-mail: info@foi.org.mt
