Mark Cutajar is the new MOC Director of Sport.

He was elected to the post last night after beating John Zammit, the other candidate for the position vacated by Pippo Psaila, with a clear 57-12 vote in favour.

Delegates representing the associations affiliated with the Maltese Olympic Committee were eligible to vote in the election, held at the headquarters in Tal-Qroqq.

Cutajar, a teacher by profession but mostly known for his work as a TV sports journalist, is a relative newcomer to the MOC fold, having been elected at the last general assembly in November.

Psaila's unexpected decision to call time on his 14-year tenure as Director of Sport last month meant that the MOC had to act swiftly to elect a successor in view of Malta's participation in the 2009 Cyprus GSSE, in June, and the Med. Games, in Pescara from June 25-July 6.

Cutajar and Zammit, the president of the Malta Cycling Federation, were the only ones to file their nomination for the post.

The two held a series of activities in the lead-up to the ballot to drum up support for their candidacy.

At a seminar last weekend, Cutajar outlined his vision for the future of Maltese sport. He identified the GSSE and the Med. Games as immediate objectives and announced plans to set up an advisory technical commission among other things.
