The team captained by Mario Cutajar won the Robbie Scerri tennis tournament, played recently at the Marsa Sports Club. Godwin Borg's team, who played against that of Elvira Petroni on the final day of competition, clinched the plate event. Sponsored by Kellogg's for the second year running, the Robbie Scerri tournament had started last month and was spread over three weekends.
Twelve teams took part. The captains were: Maria Ancilleri, Nikki Aquilina, Godwin Borg, Michelle Borg Nicolas, Chris Briffa, Ray Briffa, Karen Calleja, Mark Camilleri, Mario Cutajar, Gino Debono, Edith Hili and Elvira Petroni. Teams were made up of seven male and seven female players.
The tournament was inaugurated in 1988 in memory of Robbie Scerri, a popular personality who was also a member at the Marsa Sports Club. At first, the tournament comprised eight teams with eight players in each outfit. But, as the event gained popularity, the number of teams increased to 12 and this year 168 players participated.
