Dad told daughter he would burn her mother alive, court told
The mother overheard the conversation and then filed a police report
A 51-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to causing his former wife fear that violence would be used against her after he allegedly told their daughter he would burn her alive.
The man was taken to court on Wednesday. He did not want to be assisted by a lawyer and told the court he could not understand why he was under arrest.
Police inspector Christian Cauchi explained that the man’s ex-wife filed a report at the Domestic Violence Unit. She reported that on December 30 she was at a hotel with their daughter, who called her father to tell him he could not sell a boat without the ex-wife’s signature.
He allegedly replied: “I don’t care, I will burn your mother alive.”
The ex-wife overheard the conversation since the phone was on speaker mode.
Cauchi added that a protection order was already in place, having been issued in April 2025.
The accused pleaded not guilty to causing his ex-wife to fear violence, computer misuse and breaching the protection order.
He also requested bail, saying that in a month he needs to go abroad.
The prosecution objected and the court denied the request since the accused had several previous convictions on similar charges and civilian witnesses still had to testify.
Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech presided. Police inspector Christian Cauchi prosecuted while legal aid lawyer Yanika Bugeja was asked to appear as amicus curiae.
