Recently I was invited, in the evening, to a friend's home in Spinola Road, St Julian's. On getting there, I found total chaos. It took me more than 10 minutes to enter and about another 20 minutes to exit.
Spinola Road is a two-way street and cars are allowed to park on both sides of the road but the street is not wide enough for another two cars to pass against each other. The street is about 250 metres long and there are hardly any gaps in between where one car can enter so that an oncoming car can go through.
I am told that, quite often, especially during weekends, many drivers try to park their cars at the end of Spinola Road near the Cavalieri Hotel. But the result is that traffic jams occur frequently and then one can hear swearing, shouting and even fistfights as some drivers won't give way. The police are aware of the situation.
What are they waiting for to open the new road between Spinola Road which leads to the roundabout near the entrance to the Hilton? I say "they" because I do not know who is responsible. Is it the St Julian's council, the central government or is it the Tumas Group?
The road has been finished for some months now, complete with tarmac and pavements, but it has been kept closed. It is high time this road is opened to avoid this daily chaos.
If I am not mistaken one of the conditions laid down by MEPA to the Tumas Group for the Portomaso project was that they create a road to ease the traffic congestion at Spinola Road. The road is there, so why are they keeping it closed? Again, I ask, who is responsible to see to it that it is open? Or do we have to wait for the next visit by the Queen?
