I wish to inform Mr Jerry Polidano (The Sunday Times, June 5) that Sophi did not run or bark at the pit bull. She was next to my feet with the pram holding the baby on the other side. I saw the pit bull coming at great speed, pulling his handler, a minor, stretching the young lad to keep up with him, as the dog had already perceived his prey or victim.
How could we save Sophi? Pity we were unarmed, but we tried our very best with what was at hand at the time. In fact the handler let go of the dog and Ms Vanessa Grech held the leash for a long time trying to free Sophi and risking her own hand in the effort.
Readers should know that some breeds of dogs - pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermanns, etc. - have a scissor bite, giving them a very powerful grip. Sophi did not stand a chance.
