After all the fuss about Dar Malta in Brussels, have the same people who made such a fuss, dared to enquire and condemn the cost of the damage caused by the latest GWU strike at Enemalta to the taxpayer? Isn't this taxpayers' money as well? Actually worse - this was simply money down the drain.
It is also hoped that all those who made such a fuss about the cut in the MTA budget last year, claiming that this measure will have an adverse effect on tourism, will outrightly condemn the GWU for the great damage to our tourism industry as a result of their irresponsible strike.
The latest GWU strike immediately after the local council elections was an eye-opener to the fact that the GWU will never change. They simply cannot stand the achievements of PN-led governments. After all, why should the GWU oppose an effort by the government to change unsustainable old work practices, which will end up being borne by the taxpayer? No wonder we end up with deficits and surcharges.
Such actions are clearly not only threatening the livelihood of the same workers the GWU is supposed to be defending, but also harming different sectors of the economy, such as Air Malta and the tourism industry.
It is our duty, in the national interest, to show our disapproval of the GWU's irresponsible actions and surely not support them. Maybe next time, unions such as the AirLine Pilots Association and the Cabin Crew Union, would think twice before parading with Tony Zarb in the streets of Valletta.
