David Camenzuli signs for Reggina, opts to play for Sweden

Young defender David Camenzuli has just signed a two-year contract with the Primavera outfit of Italian club Reggina. The 17-year-old Camenzuli's move to Reggina follows a fruitful one-year spell with the youth side of Sampdoria.

It is believed that the Reggina scouts spotted Camenzuli during a tournament held last summer which saw Sampdoria facing teams of the calibre of Juventus and English side Manchester City. During this competition, Camenzuli also skippered the Sampdoria team in their match against Juventus.

After this experience, Camenzuli spent a one-week trial with Manchester City but, after weighing up his options, he decided to remain in Italy and signed a two-year contract with Reggina. Camenzuli was on the books of Torino when he first moved to Italy.

During the past few weeks, Camenzuli also made his debut for Sweden. The former Sliema and Pietà youngster holds dual citizenship as his mother is Swedish. Sources said Camenzuli has chosen to turn out for Sweden after being approached by their technical staff.

Since the age of 10, Camenzuli had been training regularly with the Malta youth national teams at Ta' Qali but has only represented his country in an U-16 tournament a couple of seasons ago.

His lack of opportunities with the Maltese national selections prompted Camenzuli to start his international career with Sweden.

A few weeks ago, he played regularly in the U-18 Swedish side that competed in a Euro championship tournament held in the Czech Republic. The Swedes' opponents were Poland, the Czechs, Germany and Slovakia.

Camenzuli had a good performance in this tournament and was named player of the match after the game against Germany.
