Jeff Gordon won his third Daytona 500 on Sunday in Florida thanks to a clever move by last year's NASCAR champion Kurt Busch.

Former NASCAR champion Tony Stewart dominated the 47th edition of the race, leading for 106 laps only to be passed by Dale Earnhardt Jr with five laps to go in the scheduled 200-lap event.

But Gordon, who led early for 23 laps, passed Earnhardt before another caution came out, causing NASCAR's richest race to go to extra laps.

On the final restart Busch moved ahead of Earnhardt, thereby denying him a last shot at Gordon's Chevrolet.

The leaders bunched up on Stewart who did not get the restart he wanted, setting up Gordon's victory.

The race was relatively trouble free until two late multiple-car crashes. A 10-car accident occurred on turn two of lap 184 and there was also an eight-car crash five laps later.
