As a councillor responsible for traffic management matters at the Msida local council, I came face to face with the acute parking problems which exist in the locality, especially during daytime.
Residents have been consistently complaining about the lack of parking facilities and the inevitable frustration they have had to undergo on a daily basis for the past years.
It was therefore obvious that the Traffic Management Committee within the same local council had no other alternative but to work out a proposal for a Timed Parking Scheme. Indeed, street surveys, studies and final proposals were compiled and eventually approved by the council.
The official proposal and relevant documents were presented to the ADT in August 2008 and thereafter, coordination meetings were held with the ADT, GRTU and the police, whereby some of their recommendations were included in the council's proposal.
Regrettably, to date, the council is still waiting for the ADT's official position on the matter, so that this scheme can be launched. Regular reminders and attempts for a meeting with the authority have so far proved futile.
Msida residents should note that the council is very disappointed with the ADT's attitude on the matter. We really do feel let down. The council eagerly looks forward to the ADT's reply, so that we can successfully implement the Timed Parking Scheme, much to the benefit of local residents.
