Denmark's Australian-born Crown Princess Mary gave birth to a son yesterday. The new-born is second in line to the throne after his father Crown Prince Frederik.

The 33-year-old princess gave birth to a healthy son at the Copenhagen University Hospital at 1.57 a.m. local time, the palace said. Frederik, 37, was present at the 10-hour birth, which was around two weeks ahead of the due date.

Flags flew from public buildings across Denmark to fete the royal baby and a 21-gun salute was to be fired at 1000 GMT from Kronborg Castle, famed from Shakespeare's play Hamlet.
