Central Bank of Malta appoints Rita Schembri as deputy governor for monetary policy

Rita Schembri has been appointed deputy governor responsible for monetary policy at the Central Bank of Malta.

The five-year appointment was made by the President on the advice of the government.

Prior to her appointment, Schembri served since 2018 as head of the bank's Economic Analysis Department.

She was also one of the bank's representatives on the European Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee and some of its substructures, notably those responsible for fiscal and macroeconomic projections. She also represented the Bank on the Malta Statistics Authority, the Building Industry Consultative Council and the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.

She joined the Bank in 1999 as a research economist in the Governor’s Office and the  External Relations Office. 

Ms Schembri holds a B.Com. (Hons) degree in Economics from the University of Malta and a Master of Science degree in Financial Economics from the Centre for Financial and Management Studies, as part of SOAS, University of London, UK.
