I refer to John Aquilina's letter and the trenching works in the busiest and most commercial area of Iklin.
Besides being subjected to noise, heaps of debris, dust and other inconveniences, I would like to point out the lack of road signs and traffic deviation notices that were conspicuous by their absence.
No warden was available to prevent traffic going through or against one-way roads.
I tried to contact the local council but they referred me to a letter sent to the residents by the Water Services Corporation and the numbers I had to call if I come across any inconvenience.
This I did. I even tried to contact the joint office in charge of the district wardens. This office referred me also to the local council because, they said, it was not their responsibility. I tried three times to contact the transport authority's engineer in charge but to no avail. I cannot tell what conditions were laid down in the tender documents. But if the WSC or the local council are not responsible for the setting up of "warning" road signs and traffic deviations, who is?
Don't such situations entail the presence of wardens in strategic spots to avoid illegal entries into one-way roads?
Shouldn't a coordinating unit be set up to see to all this and save residents complaining of inconveniences?
To what extent are the contractor and the WSC responsible? Are we a European country following basic trenching works rules and watchful in avoiding similar inconveniences to residents? I wonder.
