I cannot understand how people occupying important positions in our society, such as that of president of the Chamber of Commerce, resort to very unconvincing arguments to ensure that they do not rock the government's boat.

I am writing this after reading and listening to the various media reports of what was said by the Chamber of Commerce president when announcing the holding of a survey among members of the chamber on the package obtained by the government.

I recall that the same chamber had, in the past, made its own study on the amount of EU funds which Malta would be expected to receive from the EU once, and if, Malta becomes a member. The chamber had concluded that Lm50 million a year "at least" would be ours "by right"!

Eddie Fenech Adami had jumped on the chamber's conclusion and made that figure of Lm50 million a year his own! He had added, for effect, that those Lm50 million would be ours "Bi dritt, mhux nittalbu"!

If anything, this latest debacle of the PN government in its quest to push Malta into the EU at all costs should open the eyes of all sensible and intelligent people in our country - such as the members of the chamber and other constituted bodies - since it is becoming much more evident as time goes by that the rhetoric we used to hear about the EU is so different from the reality which is facing us starkly today.

We are still in time to save our country and ourselves from going over the brink into the EU precipice from which there is no return.
