Following the success of the series of cultural roadshows organised in Malta's outlying villages during the past two years, the Din l-Art Helwa presentation team starts its 2006 presentations in Kirkop. The presentation will be held on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the hall of the Social Club in St Peter Street, Kirkop and the event is being made possible with the support of the mayor of Kirkop, Mario Salerno.
Historian John Sarè will focus on the theme 'The Role of the Village in ancient times' and will trace the development of the parish and Kirkop's main church. Victor Rizzo will introduce Din l-Art Helwa and illustrate the heritage organisation's many educational and cultural activities, and Miriam Cremona will talk on the numerous restoration projects of historic sites undertaken by the organisation since it was founded in 1965. The other members of the presentation team are photographer Joe Chetcuti and Philip Zammit Briffa.
This highly illustrated presentation will show that Kirkop, though a small village, is extremely rich in history. Neolithic, Punic and Roman remains are proof that the village was inhabited since such ancient times.
In the early days the village was part of the parish of Bir Miftuh, but in 1592 it was proclaimed a parish on its own with a population of 320 living in about 50 houses.
The public is invited to participate and entrance is free of charge.
