Din l-Art Ħelwa honoured with prestigious European award
National Trust recognised for 'outstanding dedication' to Malta's heritage over 60 years
Din l-Art Ħelwa National Trust for Malta has been awarded a Heritage Champions award from Europe’s leading heritage organisation, Europa Nostra.
The prestigious award, which will be presented next month, is in recognition of DLĦ’s “outstanding dedication” to the protection and conservation of Malta’s cultural and natural heritage over the last 60 years.
In a statement, the NGO said the award celebrates the “tireless work” of its volunteers, donors, members and staff across decades of safeguarding threatened landmarks, restoring historic sites and advocating for sustainable stewardship of Malta’s unique identity.
Since it was established by Judge Maurice Caruana Curran in 1965, DLĦ has saved over 60 national heritage sites and landmarks such as the Red Tower in Mellieħa, the church of Our Lady of Victory in Valletta, and numerous works of art such as the seven Mattia Preti paintings in Sarria Church in Floriana.
The award is given to associations or individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage in Europe.
DLĦ executive president Patrick Calleja dedicated the award to “every volunteer, member, staff and the many sponsors and donors who have in some way contributed to the safeguarding of our heritage”.
“It affirms that passionate and persistent local action can achieve lasting change. We are deeply grateful for this award and more determined than ever to continue in our mission,” Calleja said.
The award ceremony will be held at the Europa Nostra Heritage Summit in Nicosia on May 28.
