Dingli Cliffs have been designated an area of national importance, and are, therefore, to be accorded special protection.
Some time ago, Dingli local council issued a call for tenders for the removal of dumped cars, discarded white goods, as well as "sackloads of animal insides" from the cliffs.
A visit to them will show that the Gebel Ciantar part of the cliffs is in the same polluted state it has been in for years. Hopefully, the responsible authority will, as a first step, remove the rusted cars still lying there, ruining an otherwise beautiful place.
At the same time unless measures are taken to prevent cars from being pushed or driven over the cliffs, then cars will continue to be hurled down.
This means that the costly cleaning exercise will need to be repeated.
This is a problem, for which there is fortunately a solution: the erection of bollards in those places on the cliff-edge where one could easily drive or push a car over.
These bollards should be of low height as not to spoil the view and sufficiently strong and spaced as to make it impossible for a car to be pushed or driven over the edge.
As an added precaution, wardens would need to be detailed to patrol the area, particularly at night, when most of the dumping takes place, and warning notices should be put up in a few spots, indicating penalties for offences.
