Works are under way to remove 21 disused telecommunication masts in the Baħrija area which were formerly used by Cable and Wireless and form part of the Wied Rini Maritime Coastal station. The structures stopped being used some 15 years ago.

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi this morning visited the works and said the project was expected to be completed in 15 days time at a total cost of €36,000.

He noted that following discussions with the Malta Communications Authority, it was decided to keep one of the original 22 towers for research purposes. Mr Mizzi added that the project was also aimed to remove the danger which some of the structures were posing, especially during strong winds.

The site falls within an area of agricultural and high landscape value and is mostly scheduled as an area of ecological importance.

A number of cart ruts lie in close proximity to some of the masts.
