No fewer than 740 beer and imported mineral water bottles and 64 car and heavy vehicle tyres were recovered from the sea at the Blue Lagoon, in Comino in a clean-up coordinated by the Ministry for Gozo.

The cleaning campaign, carried out in July, August and September covered also the more popular bays and beaches in Gozo and Comino.

Building waste, electrical cables, pieces of iron, ropes, chains and cans were also fished out during the clean-up.

The cleanest bay was Ramla l-Hamra, in Gozo from where only a small quantity of material such as pieces of paper and plastic bags, probably blown into the sea by the wind, were collected, a spokesman for the clean-up organisers said.

Divers from the Gozo branch of the Red Cross and from the Victoria Scouts Group took part in the campaign.
