It is sad that a section of the political establishment wishes to continue with the politics of Don Camillo and Peppone. The fact that Workers Day is celebrated separately on our isles by the different political blocs is already a negative thing.

GWU secretary-general Tony Zarb's attack on those for whom May 1 is St Joseph Day plunges us back into cold war rhetoric. Why not let them be? The fact that the whole of Malta is celebrating our country's entry into the EU and another political party, which now claims to support Europe, takes its supporters off to celebrate Workers' Day for fear that they will mix with the "others", is a sad moment.

At the University this week SDM organised a forum involving some of the candidates to the European Parliamentary elections. One particular candidate distinguished himself by his personal attacks on his opponents. He is still in the environment of a bygone age, unfit to represent anyone in Europe.

Beware, beware. Warrior priests are also writing things in a section of the press inflaming passions and stoking extremist views. It reminds us of the times when priests divided villages in our isles between supporters with different feasts all dedicated to Our Lady.

Has the time arrived to secularise our society completely say by changing the Constitution to remove all reference to the Catholic Church before they plunge us into civil war?
