In the film Apocalypto there was a scene in which humans were having their head chopped off to satisfy some god's lust for blood. A high priest was deciding who was next. All the believers were in a form of trance and believed everything the priest was telling them.
It reminded me of how the issue of divorce has been decided for us. What makes me scratch my head is why the politicians simply bow their head and obey. I mean, did the Church contest the last election? According to the last census of the number of people who still attend Mass, it seems that it has lost quite a number of "votes". And quite rightly.
While I think that if someone wants to believe in God then he should be allowed to practice his beliefs as long as he does not hurt others, I do not agree that the Church should influence our government in any way.
I am happily married but I do not believe that I have the right to dictate to other couples how they should live their lives. That was the job of the Inquisition, not mine.
We could always have a referendum, but then being Malta I suppose both sides would go out and celebrate.
