DJ megastar Fatboy Slim returning to Malta this summer
The world-renowned producer and DJ will perform at the debut Spiral Festival
This summer will see global DJ star Fatboy Slim return to Malta to perform at the debut Spiral Festival held at Gianpula Village.
The three-day festival, taking place from July 31 to August 2, features a host of well-known electronic artists, including Russian DJ Nina Kraviz and German DJ and producer Lilly Palmer. Fatboy Slim will perform on the first day of the festival.
The Malta dates form part of a global tour by renowned Serbian music festival EXIT, with similar outings scheduled in Montenegro, Croatia and Egypt.
Norman Quentin Cook, known professionally as Fatboy Slim, is a UK musician, DJ and producer who helped popularise the ‘big beats’ genre of dance music through the 1990s.
He has sold over an estimated eight million records worldwide, achieving major success with hits such as Praise You, Right Here, Right Now, and Weapon of Choice.
Fatboy Slim has performed in Malta on more than one occasion, first heading to the island in 2011.
Siberian-born singer, songwriter and producer Nina Kraviz emerged from the underground electronic scene in the 2010s to become one of the most well-known fixtures in the house and techno genres.
Some of her biggest hits include Ghetto Kraviz, I’m Gonna Get You and Skyscrapers.
Spiral Festival also sees a host of emerging artists take to the stage.
Owen Spiteri, managing director of G7 Events, EXIT’s local partner for the event, called Fatboy Slim “an icon” and “one of the biggest names in dance music, respected by all generations”.
Describing EXIT as one of the biggest festival names in the world, Spiteri highlighted the “very big line-up" of the Malta dates, which feature up-and-coming artists alongside industry heavyweights.
Reflecting on Malta’s seemingly increasingly popular festival destination, he said the local scene had evolved over the past two years.
“Malta is Malta; it’s a small island, but it has everything – entertainment, culture, and it’s still very affordable when compared to elsewhere in Europe,” he said, pointing to competing pricier destinations such as Mykonos in Greece, the Spanish island of Ibiza and the South of France.
Malta’s pricing was a strong pull for European youth, said Spiteri, while also highlighting the country’s connectivity and tourism product.
Spiral Festival joins an already packed summer festival lineup in Malta, with other offerings including Abode on the Rock, Isle of MTV, SummerDaze Festival, Glitch Festival and Anjunadeep Malta.
