Everton are set to be thwarted in their bid to extend the loan spell of Landon Donovan at Goodison Park.

The US captain has made a huge impact since joining the Merseyside club on a short-term deal in January, and Toffees boss David Moyes said he had explored the possibility of a renewed loan deal.

Moyes has previously stated any extension to the 10-week loan would be unlikely, and Galaxy coach Bruce Arena underlined that position.

"We're not interested," Arena said.

"Landon will be back here March 15. We're being consistent with everything we've said all along."

Grant not rushing on Pompey decision

Portsmouth manager Avram Grant was not ready to commit his future to the Premier League club beyond the end of the season.

Portsmouth face almost certain relegation with a nine-point deduction for going into administration last week expected to be endorsed by the league later this month.

Grant said: "We don't know what will happen. We don't know who the owner will be or what will happen with the administration.

"First, I want to see what happens with the club."

Villa boss O'Neill reveals Premier League snub

Martin O'Neill claims Aston Villa's attempts to ease a crowded fixture list by re-arranging games for next month rather than March have been blocked by the Premier League.

O'Neill was hoping the Premier League would look kindly on their request to space out fixtures but has revealed their plea has received an unsympathetic response.

He said: "We have got no midweek games in April at the moment but something like 7,000 in March as things stand.

"I've been reminded that we haven't won a game in March since I've been here. We'll now have an opportunity every two and a half days to change that."

Reina the best in England - Rafa

Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina is the best in the Premier League, according to manager Rafa Benitez, which is why he is delighted the Spaniard has agreed to a contract extension at Anfield.

Reina, 27, has been Liverpool's player of the season and, with 12 clean sheets, is in the running for the league's Golden Glove award with injured Chelsea rival Petr Cech.

"We are really pleased because I remember at the beginning people said 'for England, in the air, he is not the best'," said Benitez.

"He is the best in England, miles away from the others. Sometimes the style of goalkeepers is for them to be good in the six-yard box, Pepe is really good in the 18-yard box."

Inter offer Balotelli double wages

Inter president Massimo Moratti wants Mario Balotelli to pledge his future to the club and is ready to offer him a lucrative contract that includes a double of what he is getting at the moment.

Club product Balotelli is a crowd favourite at the San Siro even though he has clashed repeatedly with coach Jose Mourinho this season.

Reports said there will be a huge increase in wages for Balotelli that could go up to €2.5m per season plus bonuses.

Inter are fearing Balotelli could invoke FIFA's infamous Article 17 to decide his future whereabouts.

That clause allows players to buy themselves out of their contracts if they are three years into their deal and were younger than 28 when they put pen to paper.

We can win it, insists Klinsmann

Juergen Klinsmann has tipped Germany for glory at this summer's World Cup.

The former Germany coach talked up his nation's chances of being successful in South Africa, despite witnessing their 1-0 defeat to Argentina last week.

"We can still win it," he told Bild.

"I think the Germany team is one of the favourites together with several others, including Argentina. The top candidate for me, though, is Spain."

Klinsmann was in charge of Germany in 2006 when they finished third. He had a contract which was expiring and only days after leading the nation to victory over Portugal in the third-place play-off, Klinsmann decided to leave his position.

Wenger backs Theo after Waddle barb

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger defended winger Theo Walcott after the 20-year-old was accused of lacking a "football brain" who cannot compete at international level.

The criticism was made by former England international Chris Waddle following Walcott's poor showing in England's 3-1 friendly win against Egypt in midweek.

But Wenger said: "I believe for a while maybe people expected too much of Theo and now they are too hard with him.

"I believe Theo will be a great footballer, he is very young, he will be 21 this year, he will have a great future.

"I believe in him because he has a fantastic attitude, he's an intelligent boy and he is highly motivated. These players always improve."
