Pope Francis criticized those he says are washing their hands of the fate of desperate refugees when he gave a Palm Sunday message today.

While talking about the part of the gospel that describes how Jesus was denied justice, Francis criticized those who he said were washing their hands of the refugees.

"Jesus also experiences in his own flesh indifference, since no one wishes to take responsibility for his fate. I am thinking of so many other people, so many marginalized people, so many asylum seekers, so many refugees. There are so many who don't want to take responsibility for their destiny."

Over one million migrants fled to Europe last year.

A new deal reached last week calls for all migrants who cross from Turkey to Greece illegally by sea be sent back to Turkey.

The pontiff has been making support and mercy for the poor a hallmark of his papacy.
