La Salle Handball Club started their 2004/5 campaign in the same way they had left off last season by winning both Super Cup contests for men and women.

Ladies' Super Cup

La Salle 8
Aloysians V. Croissant 3

Champions La Salle got off to a flier following this win over KO runners-up Aloysians. La Salle managed to have the better start by hitting in three consecutive goals. However, by half-time Aloysians had reduced the arrears to only one goal - 3-2.

After the break, John Falzon's La Salle tried to pull away from their opponents but it was not until towards the final ten minutes of the match that they managed to impose their superiority before closing with an 8-3 win.

La Salle's Louise Micallef, Bernadette Vassallo and Maria Falzon scored two goals each while Brenda Camilleri hit a brace for Aloysians.

Referees: Tanya Baldacchino, Reuben Zarb.

Men's Super Cup

La Salle 21
Kavallieri 14

Alan Grima's La Salle claimed the first men's honour of the season after beating Kavallieri, who were parading new signing Orlando Bonnici from Salesians.

Following a balanced start which saw both sides locked on a 2-2 stalemate, La Salle scored five times without reply to take a 7-2 lead. Kavallieri did try to get back into the game but by half-time La Salle continued to pile up the pressure to build a seven-goal lead - 12-5.

In the meantime, La Salle lost the services of Chris McLean who was sent off for showing dissent after 20 minutes.

However, this setback did not stop La Salle as Kavallieri were clearly struggling to keep their opponents at bay. The final whistle found La Salle home and dry after a comfortable win.

Budding youngster Ian Turban was La Salle's top scorer with eight goals while Colin Sammut hit five for Kavallieri.

Referees: Reuben Zarb, Matthew Mamo.

Sportsmanship Trophy award

National team player Milos Stanisavljevic was officially presented with the Sportsmanship Trophy last Saturday at the University Sports Hall.

The presentation was made by Prof. J.J. Cremona and Lewis Portelli, chairman and secretary of the Organising Committee.

It was also announced during a brief ceremony that Stanisavljevic's act of sportsmanship had acquired him an international diploma from UNESCO.

Stanisavljevic's act goes back to December at Tal-Qroqq when playing in a bronze medal match for Malta against Great Britain in the EHF Challenge Trophy.

Stanisavljevic admitted with one of the referees that his shot had actually gone off target rather than in the net as the referee had thought.
