Doubles girls in sight of gold

Genovese to figure in two finals

Roseanne Dimech and Elaine Genovese made up for their unexpected early exits in the singles on Wednesday by reaching the final of the women’s doubles at the Club Arquebusiers, yesterday.

The Maltese pair had to wait about an hour before their match could start due to some early-morning showers but they took to the claycourt determined to win the game.

They finished off their oppo-nents from Iceland – Hjordis Rosa Gudmundsdottir and Iris Staub – in straight sets, 6-4 6-2. The match was over in 53 minutes.

Malta’s opponents in today’s final will be Stephanie Voigt and Kathinka von Deichmann.

The Liechtenstein girls took only one minute more than the Maltese to book their place in the final at the expense of Luxembourg’s Laura Correia and Sharon Pesch – 6-1 6-3.

Genovese has a hectic pro-gramme this afternoon as, only two hours after the girls doubles title match, she will team up with Matthew Asciak in the mixed doubles final.

On Wednesday, Genovese and Asciak made sure they will have a medal to show at the end of these Games after winning a thrilling semi-final against Monaco’s Benjamin Balleret and Louise-Alice Gambarini in three sets – 4-6 6-2 10-7.
