The drama centre Mikelang Borg is to stage `Blood Wedding`, an English interpretation of Bodes de Sangue by Federico Garcia Lorca, one of Spain`s foremost playwrights and poets.

`Blood Wedding`, written in 1933, is one of a trilogy of "rural tragedies" on which Lorca`s theatrical reputation rests. The other two are `Yerma` and `The House of Bernarda Alba`.

Renowned as the best of the three, `Blood Wedding` is a tremendously powerful work, portraying jealousy and vengeance.

`Blood Wedding` is based on a newspaper fragment which narrated the story of a family vendetta, where the daughter of one family ran away with the son of the despised family on her wedding night.

In this play, Lorca heightens the woman`s conflict by placing her in the middle of an ancient blood feud. Jealousy and revenge are some of the principal ingredients, leading on to a tragic climax.

Though Lorca was killed at the age of 38, he had built a reputation for himself as the best Spanish dramatist of the 20th Century.

He studied in Madrid and travelled throughout Spain, England and the US. Born in 1898, Lorca was killed by the Falangists at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936.

`Blood Wedding` will be staged at the Drama Centre Mikielang Borg, Blata l-Bajda on May 4 and May 5 at 6.30 p.m.

Directed by Stephen Florian, the play features Marika Attard, Mariella Aquilina, Frankie Chircop, Audrey Dingli, Miriam Magro, Beverley Saliba, Charmaine Scerri, Sean Vigar, Lorraine Dimech Genius, Valerie Blow, Alison Bugeja, Jonathan Grima and Deo Grech.

Booking is available from Mikelang Borg Drama Centre on 21220665 and 21224010.
