Traffic between Malta and Egypt has increased dramatically and a third weekly flight is being launched at the end of next month.
Visa statistics given by Malta’s ambassador in Cairo, Giovanni Miceli, show that traffic between the two countries had increased by 236 per cent last year compared to 2008.
Mr Miceli was opening the seventh Sakia exhibition for cultural service, held at the El Sawy Culture Wheel in Zamalek, Cairo.
Malta’s stand included material provided by the Malta Tourism Authority.
Mr Miceli said the political relations between Malta and Egypt, which started in the mid-sixties, were very good. Contacts between the two peoples went further back in history. Nowadays, a variety of Maltese products could be found in leading Egyptian supermarkets and Egyptian fishermen were manning the fishing fleets of Maltese entrepreneurs.
The ambassador noted that Foreign Minister Tonio Borg intended following up his official visit to Cairo in April 2008 with another visit next May.
