A total of 80 streets were constructed in residential areas by the government last year.
In addition, the Public Transport Authority issued calls for tenders for the construction of new streets in various localities, Urban Development and Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett said.
He said the government was giving particular attention to residential areas because streets there had a major impact on the quality of life of residents.
He said this sector would continue to remain a priority in the coming years until the streets reached standards that one expected from a modern European country. Local councils, he added, would remain important strategic partners with the government and the ADT to ensure this aim is reached in a short time.
Mr Mugliett was speaking as he toured road works in Guardamangia with Pietà mayor Malcolm Mifsud.
The ADT has provided Lm75,000 for the works and the council will be forking out Lm8,000 from its own funds. The project consists of the construction of Mimosa and Pietru Xuereb streets which provide access to St Luke's Hospital.
