Driver arrested for speeding and driving under influence of alcohol

Police random checks caught 17 driving too fast and several others breaking highway code in one day

A driver was arrested on Thursday during a police road block after he was found to be driving at excessive speed under the influence of alcohol.

The police said that he was caught driving at 113km/hr in an area where the maximum speed limit was 70km/h.

The man was one of 17 drivers who were stopped at police road checks on Thursday for excessive speeding.

During the random checks, police also issued a number of fines to drivers who were breaking the law for various reasons including driving without a valid driving licence, having an out-of-date insurance among “other illegalities”, the police said.

They added that they will continue carrying out random routine road checks over the coming days and weeks to ensure the roads are safer.

As many as 2,963 drivers were fined for over-speeding last month, although that marked a 20% drop compared to the same period last year.

Figures issued by LESA revealed a total of 4,966 contravention tickets were issued to motorists in July for failing to follow the highway code.
