A driver had a lucky escape when his car caught fire in Kirkop this evening.

He had the presence of mind to pull over, behind the ST Microelectronics plant, while a quick-thinking pedestrian phoned the fire brigade.

A fire-engine from the nearby Hal Far fire station was on the scene within minutes, preventing the flames from spreading beyond the front of the car, but the engine was destroyed.
