A Polish chef who stole a car while drunk was apprehended by the police after a brief chase early yesterday.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard how the police intervened after a row Michal Nowak Lukasz had with his sister, who lives in Malta.

When the police arrived, the 33-year-old man fled the scene and drove off in a stolen Peugeot.

With the police in hot pursuit, the man crashed into parked cars before he was arrested.

He was charged with stealing the vehicle, damaging it, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving the vehicle without a licence or insurance cover.

Mr Lukasz pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him but the court ordered that his sister be brought to testify on whether she was willing to accept her brother back into her apartment.

The case was put off to July 14.

Police Inspector Godwin Scerri prosecuted while lawyer Joseph Mizzi appeared for the man.
