Man pleads guilty to all charges
A man was sentenced to one year in jail after admitting to assaulting four police officers, and slightly injuring one of them in Qormi.
David Esteban Penagos, a 28-year old storekeeper from Colombia who now lives in Qormi, pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him, including possession of a fake driving licence.
The court heard how the accused was drunk when he started behaving aggressively towards his employer.
When the police arrived on the scene, he attacked the officers, slightly injuring one of them.
The court explained to the accused that the charges carried a punishment of between one and four years’ imprisonment and a fine ranging between €6,000 and €15,000.
Before sentencing, the court gave Penagos time to reconsider his plea. After consulting again with his lawyer, he confirmed his guilty plea.
Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit sentenced him to one year in prison and fined him €6,100.
The prosecution was led by Inspectors James Mallia and Roderick Attard, while Penagos was represented by legal aid lawyer Francois Dalli.
