The Dutch frigate Tromp has retaken a German merchant ship from pirates off Somalia.

The frigate responded to an SOS call from the German tanker Taipan and its marines briefly exchanged fire with the pirates who initially refused to surrender.

Ten pirates were taken prisoner and one Dutch marine was slightly injured.

The frigate is this week being relieved by HNLMS Johan de Witt which will carry a team of Maltese troops.
