When Volkswagen started the development of the new Passat, they set themselves the target to design a car that would easily surpass anything in its class in all areas, but most notably in comfort and refinement.
As all of us spend more time than ever on the road, the VW development team realised that a car's sound system becomes an integral part of the total comfort experience.
In their quest for the ideal partner to develop the perfect sound system, the VW engineers soon found that the engineers at Dynaudio shared the same deep passion and pride in their work, resulting in design and production excellence.
Over almost three decades, Dynaudio built an impressive track record, renowned and acclaimed the world over for its fine loudspeakers for both home and studio use.
Many radio stations (including the BBC), recording studios and artists around the globe rely on Dynaudio loudspeakers. Given this reputation, combined with quality and passion, a partnership was formed.
Instead of mounting a few speakers as an afterthought as a car reaches the final stage in its development, Dynaudio was involved in the design of the total sound system from the very early design stages, working closely with the Volkswagen development team.
Being involved so early meant that the Dynaudio engineers could optimise the location, mounting and housing of all components and precision-tailor the amplifiers and associated circuitry to achieve the best possible performance.
The end result is a sound system that has been perfectly integrated, both sonically and aesthetically, in the Passat's interior where the unobtrusive Dynaudio logos are the only visible clues to the system's tremendous performance potential.
A combination of ten Dynaudio loudspeaker chassis, powered by state-of-the-art digital amplifiers using digital sound processing (DSP) technology, provide a sound experience not heard previously.
The 10-speaker concept
Compared to a normal, domestic listening environment, a car's interior is a difficult place from an acoustical point of view. A varied mixture of soft surfaces (think of the seats) and hard surfaces (windows, dashboard); relative small enclosures for the speakers; less-than-ideal possibilities for positioning the speakers, and listening positions that invariably are off-centre make it a challenge to achieve a level of sound quality that betters even serious home audio systems.
Using 10 premium loudspeaker drivers, the Dynaudio sound system achieves that goal: perfect sound throughout the car, not in just one location.
For deep and dynamic bass, four bass drivers, firmly anchored to the door frames, with Dynaudio's proprietary MSP speaker cones and aluminium voice coils, are used: Two 200-mm woofers for the front and two 165-mm woofers for rear both deep yet dynamic bass. The result is true bass, rather than the bloated bass normally heard in cars.
Many car sound systems fail at an essential part: intelligibility for listening to news, weather and traffic reports, which are perhaps even more essential in a car. One of Dynaudio's hallmarks has always been an open and clear midrange reproduction.
