All e-government services had to be shut down as a precautionary measure yesterday when the Malta Information Technology Agency's server went down for a few hours due to a fault at about 10 a.m. MITA chairman Claudio Grech said: "There was a fault with a server. It is basic operational procedure to turn everything off in an event like this until the exact cause of the problem has been established."

Mr Grech ruled out any foul play or security breaches.

Most government services were restored just before 4 p.m.
