The Department of Primary Education recently approved a request from its Early Childhood Education (ECE) specialists to extend Early Childhood training within the B.Ed (Hons) (Primary) course. Eight extra ECE courses will be added to the existing ten.
These eight units represent the maximum credits students can take as part of their area of specialisation within the course. The other ten consists of four core credits and six primary cycle credits.
The 2002-06 group will be the first to be offered the possibility of extra specialisation in Early Childhood education. As a result of this initiative, students opting for the eight extra credits in ECE will be trained to address the educational needs of children aged three to eight.
At the moment, the Department of Primary Education does not offer any courses in pre-school education, and, therefore, this initiative marks another milestone in the history of the Faculty of Education. In 2006 the education community will be able to employ Faculty graduates to teach at kindergarten level.
According to Dr Carmel Borg, Head of Department, the eight extra credits constitute the immediate term goals of a plan aimed at consolidating pre-service and in-service training in ECE. The Department is also designing a Master's programme in this area of study.
