Borlotti beans recalled after tests detect pesticide not permitted in EU food products
The Food Safety and Security Authority warned on Friday that packets of dried beans from the brand Bonta Dell’Orto should not be eaten because of the presence of a pesticide which can be harmful to health if consumed over a period of time.
The Authority said the pesticide Haloxyfop found in the product is not permitted for use in food products sold within the European Union.
“While eating a contaminated item does not present an immediate health risk, long-term intake of Haloxyfop could lead to health concerns,” the Authority said.
It added exposure to this substance “should be kept as low as possible”.
The dried borlotti beans are sold in 500g packets with the lot number 2523a703 and a best before date of 28-02-2027.
Consumers are advised not to consume the implicated product and either dispose of it or return it to the store from which it was purchased.
