E-bike grants rise to €650 as Transport Malta renews electric vehicle schemes

New electric cars are once again eligible for a €8,000 grant

Cash grants to buy a new electric bicycle will rise to €650 this year, as Transport Malta renewed a series of grants for electric vehicles on Monday.

The measures include a range of grants to buy electric motorcycles, cars, e-kick scooters, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles, as well as grants to retrofit existing vehicles.

All grants, except those for e-bikes, remain identical to last year.

People buying a new electric car worth up to €40,000 will once again receive a cash grant of €8,000, while those buying an electric motorcycle will get a €2,000 grant (or up to 80% of the selling price).

They can also apply for a scrappage grant of €1,000 when scrapping a car or €500 for a motorbike. An additional €1,000 will be given if the vehicle they are scrapping is registered in Gozo.

Buyers who purchase a used electric car or motorcycle and scrap an older petrol or diesel vehicle are also eligible for grants ranging between €750 and €4,000.

However, anybody buying a new e-bike will now receive a grant of €650, up from last year’s €500.

Meanwhile, e-kick scooters are eligible for a €150 grant.

Anyone buying a wheelchair-accessible vehicle for use as a taxi or for transporting passengers can receive a €10,000 grant if they also scrap a vehicle over ten years old.

Grants to retrofit petrol or diesel vehicles for LPG range from €400 to €1,500. Meanwhile, owners of heavy-duty vehicles such as buses and trucks can receive a grant of between €500 and €1,000 to install photovoltaic panels on their vehicles.

Owners of diesel and petrol cars can also receive up to €20,000 to retrofit them to a battery electric powertrain in order to eliminate tailpipe emissions. Owners of buses, coaches and trucks can receive up to €80,000.
