The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is holdings its tenth annual EC Maritime Law course - an overview of the maritime dimension of EU policy, as reflected in the various rules and legislation - covering shipping, fisheries, coastal zone management and marine environmental protection.
The focus is placed, however, on shipping. The key topics to be examined in the course include EC institutions and external policy; Overview of EC maritime law, with an emphasis on shipping law; EC ship safety and pollution prevention/liability, including post-Erika packages; EC maritime competition law; EC maritime transport external relationships; and EC fisheries policies.
Invited lecturers include Dr Joe Borg, EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, who will inaugurate the course on April 4 at 11 a.m., Gunter Weiss, former Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Latvia and Malta, Bernard Van Heule, legal adviser, Belgian Shipowners' Association, Lino Vassallo, executive director, Merchant Shipping Directorate, Malta Maritime Authority, Dr Ivan Vella, lecturer, IMLI, and Mitja Grbec, junior assistant lecturer, IMLI.
The course, which will be held at the Institute's premises, will be spread over two months (12 lectures) and the cost is £600.
