Education Ministry appoints advisory board following Pembroke school stabbing
Seven-person board to be led by top ministry official
A seven-person advisory board has been appointed to make recommendations on how to improve behaviour management at schools following a stabbing in a Pembroke college.
The advisory board was announced by the Education Ministry on Tuesday afternoon.
It will be chaired by ministry director general Ritienne Borg Saliba. Members include psychiatrist Anton Grech, criminologist Saviour Formosa, prisons director Chris Siegersma, teachers’ union representative Elaine German, former teacher Maria Camilleri and counselling officer Ryan Portelli.
The board has been tasked with “offering strategic and operational recommendations” to the ministry with regard to behaviour management in schools and student wellbeing. The recommendations must be in line with a National Education Strategy and local laws.
The ministry statement provided no further detail about the advisory board’s remit, length of its term or when it is expected to provide its first recommendations.
The appointment follows a serious incident at St Clare College in Pembroke on Monday morning, when a 14-year-old student was stabbed by a schoolmate at the start of the day.
