Last night club presidents and secretaries from the Premier League had a meeting with high officials from the Malta FA, including president Joe Mifsud, at the Centenary Hall.

During the meeting it was unanimously agreed that the Premier League competition of season 2006/07 will be played with eight teams, a move that should generate more interest and attract more spectators to the stadium.

Various proposals were discussed in a lenghty meeting. At the end, the majority agreed that next season the Premier League championship will be contested by ten teams on three rounds, at the end of which, three teams will be relegated and one promoted from Division One. That would pave the way for the 2006/07 Premier League to be played between eight teams.

Changes to the Premier League format will only be approved by the MFA Council members who also have to decide about the relegation issue in an eight-team format.

The most likely outcome is a direct demotion for the bottom-placed team, which will be replaced by the Division One champions.

Moreover, the seventh-placed team in the top-flight will have to figure in a best-of-three play-off with the Division One runner-up for the other Premier League slot.
