Charles Abela, deputy executive director of ports at the Malta Maritime Authority, has been elected chairman of the facilitation committee of the International Maritime Organisation.

The committee facilitates the documentation processes between port organisations and the vessels calling in port.

The Malta Maritime Authority is an active member of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) council and participates in its five committees.

Mr Abela is also responsible for EU ports affairs and the general management of ports and is a member of the IMO/ILO working group on port security that was set up following last December's amendments to the SOLAS Convention and the introduction of the International Ship and Port Facility Code (ISPS Code).
