Electricity generated by the Marsa and the Delimara power stations over the 12 years up to 2002 had doubled from one million to two million megawatts, meaning an average yearly increase of 102,838 megawatts, the National Statistics Office said.
The NSO said an increase in electrical power generation and consumption has also been registered in other countries.
Taking an overview of the European candidate countries including Malta, there has been an increase in electricity generation during the period 1999 to 2001.
This has been especially high in the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
This summer the heat has pushed electricity demand up to the extent that Enemalta reported a record of 394 megawatts for summer.
The corporation said that this demand was 7.3 per cent higher than the record for summer, registered last year on August 6, when the demand had reached 367 megawatts.
